The Mother of All Jeep Tours
Ok, maybe when you think of jeep tours to think of those pink jeep in Arizona. Not well, I'm not derogatory type of tour. But I wanted to experience something more exotic, more remote and I found when I traveled to Iceland in late fall. I've been longing for some adventure and not be particularly athletic, I wanted the kind of adventure that does not require heavy lifting or long hikes at high altitudes. Then, I looked at the tours that are offered Reykjavik and found a number of tour operators that offer super-jeep tours.
First let me say that you can not think they're Icelandic in the off-road, it would be wrong. There are tons and tons of off-road to be taken in that country. And, the super-jeeps are just that, super - super cool it is. Many of these four-wheel drive trucks are trademarks that are not offered or common in the United States as the Nissan Patrol or Land Rover Defenders. These trucks get a glacier trekking equipment and come out looking as they could cope with almost anything. And, it almost has to.
I booked a tour with a tour operator and chose one of their trips to the glaciers that, obviously, are available all year round. On the way to the glacier (do not ask me t try to spell the name of the glacier) we had to ford two streams. Actually, more like rivers. These jeeps are super snorkels for this purpose, a truck accessory that I never thought much of a. That could be because I did not know what they were, well now I do. In case you do not know, is a snorkel for the crossing of the streams so that the engine can keep the drawing in combustion air Instead of water, which is a no-no.
Then we reached the glacier and we had to stop to lower the tire pressure in tires on our jeep tour mass. To Glacier tours, jeeps, in my case the Land Rover Defenders, can only have five people on the basis of weight and needs to deflate the tires a bit. Anyway, once this was complete we headed to the glacier and after a few minutes they were surrounded by white and sometimes common blue-green ice in glaciers. It was spectacular. Our driver was very experienced and certainly the jeep to work with GPS and other devices. It was not only his jeep tour five miles per hour, as if we were at Disneyland or something well. No, our driver took risks and came up steep ridges and in some small jumps. It was exciting, beautiful and surreal.
Then about half of the route we stopped for a light lunch. We had some things Icelandic and then a little beer and spirits (not the driver). The driver set up a table and snow banks and we sat there eating and drinking somewhere in a huge glacier in this small island just below the Arctic Circle - what an adventure.
I went in search of adventure and I have it. But I also found the beauty and some of the more exotic and surreal landscapes that have witnessed. If you are adventures, you have to try someday.
