What is the Best Tennis Racquet for my Situation!?
Hi, I am currently an average 3 to 3.5 tennis player. I played when I was younger(8) but stopped. I am 14 right now and just picked it up again. Next year I shall try out for the team so I am going to practice a lot this year. My style is play, is fast and agile, with a above average serve and a good groundshot. My backhand and volleys need some improvement though. I usually play on hardcourt, but i occasionally play on clay. I have been playing with a old Wilson Racquet that I got for like 20 dollars. I feel that I want to jump right up and get an expensive pro racquet. I dont want to get a tweener racquet because I think getting a pro racquet is a better investment and will help my game. What should I get? I was looking at the Yonex Rds 001, Prince Speedport Red 03 and the Babolat pure drive cortex. I am pretty set on my strings, I love the Babolat Hurricane tour 16. What Racquet do you think suits my game? BTW I slice really well and tend to do it often. Thanks a lot
If you like spin as much as it sounds, you'll want to get something with a more open string pattern: 16x18 or 16x19. Maybe 16x20.
And you are right to be looking for a more advanced frame. Just don't get in over your head. For instance, the k-six-one tour (Fed's frame) would be too much for you at this point. Try to stay above 11 oz, but you probably don't want to go over 12.
Also, since you haven't played in too long, I would avoid midsize frames. But don't go more than 100", either. 100" would probably be the best for you, but you could do a 97 or 98" well enough. You just don't want to go too small right now, cause you aren't going to be consistent enough for that yet.
Some new frames that fit this category:
Babolat: AeroStorm, AeroPro Drive Cortex, or regular pure drive cortex
Fischer: M Pro no1 98
Head Microgel Extreme
Prince EXO3 Graphite midplus (100)
Yonex Rds 001 midplus
There's also some older frames that would be cheaper, available on the liquidation page at tenniswarehouse.com:
Prince O3 speedport tour (demoed this once and loved it)
Head liquidmetal radical MP
Völkl tour 9 v-engine
All of these will be great if you are serious about improving your game.
And sure, they might be recommended for people with higher ratings than you... But I got a frame in this same category when i was 13. I wasn't even 100 lbs at that point. But it worked great for me.
