Self-service checkout - the advantages and disadvantages

For 2010 it is expected that all homeless, the robots, hover cars and jet packs, so is disappointing to get here and find all we get is the Roomba, Toyota Prius and IPAD. However, there is an area where technology has advanced to the beat futuristic hopefully the beginning of the XXI century.

Throughout the industry , many retailers are replacing manned automated equivalent boxes. Dependent on the chat about the weather and serving customers are being replaced by the quiet but firm insistence that there is an "unexpected element in bagging area."

But are these new systems is the future, or are condemned to follow the path of Segway?

EVERY LITTLE HELP
Self-service solutions is undoubtedly growing in popularity. In the UK, Tesco has counters Self-service with 256 stores, which are responsible for a quarter of all transactions.

In October, Tesco took a step further and presented an Express store in Northampton, where customers were served by a single staff member and a series of self-checkouts.
Sainsbury's is following suit with an increased offer of 220 convenience stores, and more willing to follow. Wal-Mart has been self-service lanes payment since 2004.

Many believe that the number of Self checkout is expected to double over the next year. So this is clearly a growing trend, but what's the appeal?

From the retailer's point of view, the first advantage is reliability. A box of self-service will provide the same service to every customer, not getting insolent if unpleasant, or fold or break the rules if they are persuasive or abusive. self-checkouts may also reduce their staffing needs with a staff member can monitor up to four to six checkout lanes at the same time.

For the customer self-service boxes also provide a number of benefits. self-checkouts may allow more customers to pay and go faster. Up to six checkout units can fit in the space of a cashier's station. In addition, many customers prefer to scan and pack their own purchases without having to deal with a teller.

Or does it?
However, self-service until it comes their disadvantages. On the one hand, many customers like dealing with a human being into a store. What is more, not everyone is tech enough astute to know intuitively how to operate the boxes. Even with the demonstration animations on the touch screen and audio instructions, many people still have problems to work self-service systems. This can cause delays, reducing queues at the way these boxes are designed to avoid.

Addition this, in the era of environmental awareness Bag for life, the scales finely tuned to see customers shopping means that customers often are forced to use disposable plastic bags to avoid incurring the wrath of "unexpected item in bagging area" warning.

For these reasons and others, self-service has proved unpopular with the public purchasing. In a Fatcheese survey found that 48 percent of people asked thought boxes self was a nightmare. 46 percent said that items do not scan correctly. 13 percent complained of having to do all the work, and 12 percent said they always I had to ask for help.

For this reason, manned boxes are not quite consigned to the history books at the moment.

"Never get completely get rid of the envelope boxes, "a Sainsbury's spokesman said." We are all the best people on the election. boxes self is very popular among customers who use a lot, but we realize people either like them or not. "

So the best solution for Retailers will probably be a hybrid, a combination of personal cases, and automated, which are being upgraded. For example, an alternative system some supermarket chains are to be used involves barcode scanners portable, allowing customers to scan products as they tour the shop, while that the kiosk-type boxes are constantly being refined and perfected.

The day of fully automated supermarket is not about us, however, not a long way. However, the advanced interfaces becomes, who always need that human touch. But we most definitely have not heard the last of the box self.
