College Tennis: Racquet Weights

College tennis the United States is organized by the National Collegiate Athletics Association. Each year, many high school tennis athletes are hoping to get noticed during college tennis recruiting. The weight and balance of a racquet greatly influences the way a racquet feels as it is gripped and swung around the tennis court. Many professional players prefer heavier racquets, with light heads, and are usually referred to as “traditionally weighted and balanced” racquets. They generally weigh around 11-13 ounces, balanced at 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches head light so as to retain maneuverability. They are also often referred to as “player’s racquets” since they are usually easier to control and are easier to manage if a player is able to provide his own power. It was discovered several years ago that it was possible to make a racquet more maneuverable without reducing weight in the head. By lessening the weight in the handle, the racquet weight was lighter overall, while in the hoop generally the same amount of mass is retained. Several racquet manufacturers have since introduced such lightweight, head-heavy racquets. The advantage of this kind of racquet is an increased maneuverability, especially on groundstrokes, all the while without having a negative impact on power. However, some players who have opted to use the lightweight, head-heavy models claim these racquets don’t feel as “solid”. A reduced racquet weight will alter its feel, and will bring disadvantages as well as advantages. The Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both student tennis athletes and coaches involved in the process of college tennis recruiting. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. D1Athletes is an online community wherein high school tennis athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need during college tennis recruiting. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.
