Donald Budge: An American tennis legend

The legendary American tennis player, John Donald Budge was and still is considered one of the best players each play the game. He enjoyed an incredible career that involved winning all four Grand Slam titles in 1938 and became the first player ever it. During his amateur and professional game a player he was world number one for five of those years. He died on January 26, 2000, but his brilliant race remains alive in the hearts and minds of tennis players everywhere.

Donald Budge was born on June 13, 1915, and began making a splash on the tennis scene, while in his early twenties. By 1937 he had begun to enter his account and showed that had the ability to dominate the sport. He became in the first tennis player to win the Wimbledon men's doubles, men's singles and mixed doubles all in the same year. Later in 1937 also led the team U.S. to win the Davis Cup, which was the first time I had done in over a decade. The following year, in 1938, was when he took home all four tournaments Grand Slam and solidified his reputation at the top of the tennis rankings.

Budge was given the honor of being given the prize James E. Sullivan in 1937 by be the nation's outstanding amateur athlete and then later was named Athlete of the Year in 1937 and 1938, both members of the Associated Press. This was done largely by incredible statistics he had built in that year and a half period. Don had won 92 straight games and 14 tournaments.

In the early forties, Budge took leave of the court to join the Air Force and served in World War II. In 1943, he tore a shoulder muscle during a of vigorous training. He was still able to perform most of their military duties over the next two years until he took a medical leave in 1945 to see an osteopath to work with his injury. His tennis game would never be the same again, but I was still hitting some of the world's best players Tennis at its best as Pancho Gonzales in 1954.

As to where Donald Budge sits in terms of the greatest tennis players of all time, the issue has been widely discussed by tennis professionals worldwide. It is considered by many as the greatest player to play the game. His 6'1 "frame and back fitted perfectly delivered to the scene and played tennis with powerful blows and quick reflexes. One of the things that most experts agree on is that he was the best player before the Second World War and still holds his own with those who followed later. Only Jack Kramer and Ellsworth Vines Budge could be considered better than in his prime.

No matter what your position in the list of all-time greatest, is very clear that Donald Budge was the most dominant player of his generation and has secured its place in tennis history. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1964 in Newport Rhode Island, and his legacy will live on.
