Originally known as Goldings Park, the land was developed into park land between 1788 and 1797 by Frances Russell.

In 1921 the War Memorial Park was purchased and opened for the people of Basingstoke as a memorial to those killed in the First World War (1914-1918).

Erected in 1923 at the London Road entrance to the Basingstoke park, the war memorial was designed by sculptor Louis Frederick Roslyn who was also responsible for the Maesteg War memorial.

Refurbished in 2001 with the addition of a new aviary and woodland walk, financed from a National Lottery Fund award.
