Tennis elbow is not invincible
Tennis is a physical sport. Running, jumping, swinging, and sometimes diving on the hard court, like any other sport, There are many ways that tennis players can create an injury. However, there is an injury that is so prevalent among tennis players the injury itself has tennis word in the name; that injury, of course, is tennis elbow.
While tennis elbow, known medically as lateral epicondylitis, is not limited to tennis players, it is estimated that one third of all tennis players who experience the condition at some point in their lives. Any person engaged in lift elbow, or repetitive movements of the elbow and wrist, is likely to be susceptible to this condition, so naturally, tennis players are at high risk.
The cause of the pain of this condition is not a medical certainty, but is believed to be caused by tiny tears in the tendons attaching the forearm muscles to the bone in the elbow joint. Is that the forearm muscles that are used to cock the wrist back - extensor carpi radialis brevis - which are suspected culprits in this condition.
So how do you know you have tennis elbow and not a painful condition other? Individuals with this disease often feel pain on the outside of the elbow, especially when grasping an object and cocking back the wrist. The pain is usually worse when you lift something - although the pain at rest should expect - and often described as pain radiating down the arm. The pain of tennis elbow usually begins slowly, but has been known to have a beginning sudden too.
If you believe you are suffering from tennis elbow you should consult your doctor immediately. Treatment for this condition is generally non-invasive, and more than 90% of patients are successfully treated without surgery. Tennis players can often solve the problem through some subtle changes their equipment and technique.
A good first step is to ensure that you are using a racket with a grip size. Another option is to reduce stress on the strings of your racket. This reduction in the tension of the strings will soften the impact of the ball, and reduce twisting of the forearm in hits. Finally, change the real tennis stroke can help reduce negative impacts on the elbow as well. Players who learn to swing without carrying the racket with his elbow in a position flexed often can relieve much of the situation and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
There are non-invasive medical options that can address the pain of this condition. Anti-inflammatory drugs used to fight both pain and inflammation. If a regimen of anti-inflammatory drugs is unsuccessful, injections Cortisone is an option that has proved effective in some patients.
However, the injections are not always successful and if relief does not come quickly, then is probably not going to be served by continued injections. However, the medication is not the only way you can explore when it comes to relieving pain and discomfort the elbow region. The use of an elbow brace may reduce the stress placed on the elbow during tennis career.
Unfortunately, if the treatment options above are not successful then surgery may be the only path to relief. The good news is that surgery has a very high success rate and only required in a small percentage of patients.
