Tennis Supplies: Racquet Length

The lengths of the tennis racquets are not chosen by the level of expertise nor the style of the player, but still is important to consider. Although the racquets usually varies little in size, it is very important in choosing the right length for your style. The legal standards in tennis tournaments reside in the range of 27 to 29 inches. Usually most racquets would be 27 inches. However, there are distinct advantages for longer racquets as it provides more reach on groundstroke, added strength on serves and more powerful smash as there is added leverage on the racket. Tennis racquets with longer lengths today would usually made it lighter to match the weight of standard racquets so that it would not have a weight disadvantage. In other words, there should not be disadvantages in using a longer length racquet.

If there are no disadvantages and there are so many advantages for long length tennis rackets, why is not everyone using a long-length racket? Although on paper the longer length racquets sounds very promising, a lot of players have complained that the longer length racquets felt "hollow" and does not feel like a normal racquet. This is mainly due to the fact that with longer racquets manufacturers need to make it lighter to compensate for their additional of length. If the length is proportional to the weight, then longer racquets would be considerably heavier than standard racquets and it will be a pain to control. Due to a significant weight reduction on the longer racquets, it is very reasonable that the racquet would not feel the same as a standard racquet.

In conclusion, when planing to upgrate or renew your tennis supplies, be sure to take in consideration of the lengths of the racquets as longer lengths have a reach and strength advantage but seasoned players might need to think twice in choosing long length racquets as it will take some time to get use to the feeling of the weight and additional length.
